Pelicans Over Cove at Point Lobos California - There were endless formations of pelicans at Point Lobos near Carmel California. More Info FYI - Shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and a 24-70 L-Series II lens. I found it more than a little bit ironic that I was shooting formations of pelicans most of the day while carrying my camera gear around in pelican cases. Totally unplanned, but that's the way it worked out. And it worked out well for the cameras the few times I slid down the hillsides or were banging around on the rocks down in the coves. All equipment was dry, dent free and scratch free. (Someone just asked me for my Amazon link to pelican cases... I'm not selling anything guys, this is all just FYI - Enjoy! )

The mix of colors at this stage of the sunset was pretty spectacular. The blue white colors of minutes before mixed with the warm red and yellow tones to display just about every color in the rainbow. As always, it only lasted only moments. I must head back to Carmel soon :)

More Info for the brave and curious... Sacre Coeur Basilica, Paris, France - One of the most popular (and photographed) destinations in Paris. It's usually swarming with people, but it's worth it because it's a terrific mix of architecture, nature, religion and the arts. I also like to visit because it's on the hill in Montmartre, an artist colony where many struggling artists had studios. These included Salvador Dalí, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Pablo Picasso. Warning! - Potentially Boring Story! - The morning I shot this photo, I had looked out the window of my hotel room and saw Paris was exceptionally beautiful with clear skies full of puffy clouds, and knew I had to go out shooting. I hadn't yet been to Sacre Coeur or the adjacent Artist Colony that trip, so I headed for the metro. On the trip I met a very sweet French woman also heading to Montmartre and Sacre Coeur. We hit it off and talked (as much as possible with her moderate English and my zero French) about photography and her work as a clothing designer. When we got out at the subway stop near the Basilica, she was trying to tell me something, but with my language handicap, I couldn't understand. I finally waved, smiled and started to walk away. She literally grabbed me by my shirt and dragged me in a direction away from my destination - I gave in and followed... she obviously knew something I didn't. A couple blocks and a few elevators later, she walked me though her office space in a high-rise that was like a vertical 'garment-district' and out on to a rooftop patio that had a stunning 180 degree view of Montmartre Hill, the centerpiece being Sacre Coeur directly in front of me. At least 99% of all photos of Sacre Coeurs Basilica are shot looking up because there are virtually no vantage points except private buildings that have elevated access to view and shoot the Sacre Coeur; this kind woman had given me that access. She saw my pleased look, gave me a hug, waved me out onto the patio and disappeared to get on with running her business. A couple hours and lots of photos later, I found her, thanked her again hugely, and got another hug... Whoever started that rumor that the French are unfriendly or arrogant experienced a different France than I have during my visits. Kindness like this ladys' is common and I've had nothing but good experiences.

More Info FYI - A lot of people have asked me for the Location of this field and the Roman and the Roman ruins I mentioned above. The full answer to this is “I think it's in Luxembourg, but it could be in Germany or Belgium also. I am not sure.” We zigzagged in and out of countries so many times that day that day I often had no clue what country we were in. We didn't know we were in Germany until we stopped for lunch and they told me at the restaurant. I did take an iPhone Photo of the sign on the back road to the ruins, but all it says on it is ”Villa Romaine.” The Concierge at our hotel in Luxembourg City told us about the site and she gave us a map to get there, but I paid no attention to borders or countries; we were just looking for interesting places. So I'd recommend getting yourself a map of Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg, and start looking for Villa Romaine. I'd offer to send you the cell phone photo, but I had the geo tag info turned off, so that would be of little help. It really doesn't matter: If you're looking for stunning flower fields, forests or beautiful country villages, just head north from Luxembourg City and stay on the back country roads. You'll pass hundreds of places to stop and take images, hike or whatever else it is you like to do. It's beautiful country - Truly stunning… John

Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles - High-Res HDR Image. I've been asked by a few people if this was shot in HDR on iPhone. As noted, it IS a high-resolution HDR Photo, but it was created from seven Canon CR2 RAW files shot in increments from -2 to +2 and then merged and toned in HDR software. If an iPhone ever comes out the could take a shot, I will buy it instantly. I should also mention that part of the images' color and feel are due to the fact that there were brush fires in the surrounding hillsides that day, and it was also shot at sunset. More Info FYI - A few people have asked me for details on this church and the photo, and were guessing locations like Portugal and Madrid. They've been a bit surprised when I told them it's in the little known town of Beverly Hills California :) - While it gives the impression of a far off foreign cathedral or basilica (the blue white clouds add to that feeling), I was dodging the maniacal Beverly Hills traffic while shooting the photo trying not to get run over by. Across from restaurant Row and Rodeo Drive, it’s on the residential side of town just a few minutes walk from homes once occupied by dozens of the old greats of Hollywood, like the Lucille ball, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Benny. Those homes are now occupied by the people you see in the theaters on the weekends; I'll skip the names here because I'm just not into that stuff. They also wanted the shooting info; it was a pretty straightforward HDR image shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 24-70 L-Series II lens on a tripod with a cable release. More Info FYI - This is a lakeside stand alone house/castle in Bruges in Belgium, another of the 500 to 1000 Year Old Houses on the Canal. A bit od sunshine made it through the normally gloomy weather in Bruges in Belgium, A bit of blue filed the sky for the day, Once you see this city/village, you begin to understand why it's called the Venice of the North. Even though it's many miles away from the ocean, it was commerce Capital of Europe 10 centuries ago, the 12 to the 15th centuries being referred to as The Golden Era for the city. Nature and good luck had provided them with the river that gave them ocean access, and they built an elaborate System of canals to take advantage of it. An interesting city to say the least. While walking from the Louvre through the Tuileries on the way to the Opera House for a drum concert (Yeah, Paris is a tough town, I know.....) I passed this "I Have To Shoot It” scene, and I'm glad I did. I didn't have time to explore the backgound story, or what was going on, but I thought it made for a unique image.
